About Sara-Mae

My career has always circled storytelling. I like work that connects ideas with people: the curious, the culturally rich, and occasionally the gloriously niche.

Whether I’m shaping copy for organisations, producing award-winning podcasts, editing literary work, or writing fiction and essays of my own, I love finding the thread of feeling that makes an audience care.

I’ve spent many years working across editorial, digital and audio, creating work for charities, cultural organisations and commercial clients. I’m especially drawn to projects with a strong sense of community.

More recently, I’ve done a great deal of work in the heritage and cultural sector, including with Letchworth Heritage Foundation, creating engaging social media videos and other content that is rooted in place. I love to explore themes like culture, identity, memory and storytelling. My work usually begins with the practical question: how do we make this meaningful to the people we want to reach?

Alongside my freelance work, I’m Senior Producer at Fable Gazers, where I research, script, produce and edit podcasts. My first podcast series, The Sugar Baby Confessionals, won a British Podcast Award, which was a fairly dramatic way to begin. I also created Heyer Today, a documentary-style podcast celebrating Georgette Heyer, and have interviewed guests including Stephen Fry. My audio work usually takes years of research to develop, and is put together with a lot of love.

My editorial background includes being the first female editor of The London Magazine in more than 200 years, as well as editing Trespass, an arts and literary magazine exploring transgressive subjects with intelligence, seriousness and a little mischief. I’ve also worked as an editorial director, managed literary projects, edited collections, and supported writers and organisations in finding the right shape, structure and tone for their work.

As a writer, I work across fiction, essays, poetry and scripts, and I’m currently working on a novel. My published work has appeared in a range of journals, magazines and anthologies. I’ve also narrated audio, including work connected to Jennifer Kloester’s Jane Austen’s Ghost**.

If you’re looking for someone who can move between editorial thinking, creative development, copywriting and audio production – that’s my sweet spot.
